Overview
At Grip Studios, we focus on creating strong looking environments where lighting plays a key role in the player's experience. We are looking for a Lighting Artist who can blend technical skill with a strong visual eye to build atmospheric and believable scenes for our projects.
In this role, you’ll work closely with the Art Director to define the visual mood and aesthetic of our environments and cinematics. You’ll also collaborate with Environment Art and Level Design to ensure lighting supports both gameplay and storytelling while maintaining performance.
You will use Unreal Engine 5 to create naturalistic and stylized real-time lighting for an open-world project, collaborating with a highly experienced development team.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in realtime lighting for AAA in Unreal Engine
- Strong understanding of Unreal Engine 5 and its real-time lighting workflows and tools.
- Strong knowledge of color theory, composition, and cinematic lighting techniques.
- Proficiency with PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials and shader logic.
- Experience with post-processing tools like color grading, exposure, and LUTs.
- Ability to balance visual quality with technical constraints and performance targets.
- Technical knowledge of performance costs, GPU optimization, and shadowing techniques.
- Proactive approach to troubleshooting technical lighting issues and light leaks.
- Self-driven problem solver with an ability to iterate based on feedback.
- Skill in using light and shadow to guide the player and enhance storytelling.
- Strong portfolio showcasing high-quality real-time lighting work.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Art Director to establish and maintain the visual mood of the game.
- Create high-quality real-time lighting setups for environments, cinematics, vignettes in Unreal Engine 5.
- Work with Level Design to ensure lighting guides player navigation and gameplay readability.
- Optimize lighting performance for open-world environments in collaboration with Tech Art and Engineering teams.
- Set up and tune post-processing effects, including color grading, exposure, and fog.
- Optimize lighting setups to meet performance targets without sacrificing visual quality.
- Stay up to date with the latest UE5 lighting technologies and share best practices with the team.
- Debug and optimize lighting artifacts, shadowing issues, and performance bottlenecks in large-scale environments.
- Maintain a clean and organized workflow within the engine and project structure.
- Contribute to lighting documentation, best practices, and workflow efficiency.
